Sony’s flagship earbuds are the industry benchmark for a reason. The active noise cancelling is class-leading — genuinely rivalling over-ear headphones — and the sound quality is beautifully balanced with rich bass that doesn’t overpower detail. LDAC hi-res audio support puts them ahead of AirPods for Android and Windows users. Battery life is 8 hours with ANC on, 24 hours with the case. The only weakness is the relatively bulky fit, which can cause pressure after 90+ minutes of wear.

If you own an iPhone, AirPods Pro 2 are a no-brainer. The H2 chip delivers instant pairing, seamless handoff between Apple devices, and the best call quality of any earbuds on the market thanks to voice isolation. ANC is excellent (just shy of the Sony XM5), and spatial audio with head tracking genuinely elevates movie-watching on an iPad. Android users should skip these — you lose spatial audio, lossless codec support, and most of the ecosystem magic.

Bose has been the ANC king for 20 years and the QC Ultra Earbuds continue the tradition. In our testing on the London Tube, these edge out even the Sony XM5 for cancelling low-frequency rumble. Sound quality is slightly warmer than the Sony — pleasant for podcasts and vocal-heavy music, but bass fans will prefer Sony. Battery life is a slight weakness at 6 hours ANC on, and they’re expensive — you’re paying a 20% premium over Sony purely for marginally better ANC.

Nothing’s cheaper Ear (a) model punches absurdly far above its £99 price. You get genuine active noise cancelling (not passive like some budget buds), 5.5 hours battery with ANC, LDAC hi-res codec support, and the company’s striking transparent design. Sound quality is V-shaped (boosted bass + treble) which works well for mainstream music but less so for classical or jazz. At this price point, these are the buds to beat for anyone on a budget.

If pure audio quality is your priority and you’re not worried about ecosystem integration, the Sennheiser Momentum TW4 deliver. They support aptX Lossless and AAC, offer incredibly natural mid-range reproduction, and have the most accurate treble of any earbuds on this list. The ANC and app experience are a step behind Sony and Bose, and the fit takes longer to get right — but for the audiophile who listens critically, these are the winners.
